In this policy “we,” “our,”  or “us,” means Cable News International Limited or its affiliate Cable News International Inc Abu Dhabi branch. This Privacy Policy sets out how we handle the Information of individuals applying to join the CNN Academy Abu Dhabi in 2021.

Please read this Privacy Policy carefully to understand our policies and practices regarding your Information. If you have any further questions, or if you are not sure about anything, please feel free to get in touch with us using the contact details set out at the end of this Privacy Policy. 

Where permitted by law, by providing Information you consent to our use of Information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

 

Information We Collect and Purposes for Collection

We collect and use Information for the purposes of running the CNN Academy Abu Dhabi in 2021 including assessing and selecting applicants and managing the course for successful applicants. This information may include personal information (e.g., name, phone number, postal address, email address, professional & educational information, etc.), technical information (e.g. device identifier, IP address, browser type, operating system, etc.), account information (e.g. account credentials if you create an account on one of our websites, etc.), audio-visual recordings and portfolios (e.g. video clips presenting yourself as part of the selection process)  and usage information (e.g., how you use and navigate to and from our websites, services and applications, etc.). We may combine these types of information. We refer to this information in this Privacy Policy as “Information.”

The Information we collect depends on your interactions with us, what you choose to submit as part of the application and selection process, and how far in the selection process you progress. Whenever possible, we will collect this Information directly from you. However, on some occasions, we may obtain Information from third parties,  online sources such as LinkedIn, the referees you provide on your application, background check providers (if you participate in a background check process, which we conduct in compliance with local law) and publicly available sources.

The main types of Information we may collect from you, and the main purposes for each, are described below.

Category of Information - Audio and visual information (e.g., personal performance, including an image or video of you), and information about your performance at interview

Category of Information - Unique and online identifiers (e.g., your IP address, device identifier) and Internet or other electronic network activity information – such as browsing history, search history and information regarding your interaction with our websites or other online content
Purpose(s) for Collection - To help recognize your browser or device, maintain your preferences, provide certain features, and collect information about your online interactions with us; To provide, develop, maintain, personalize, protect, and improve our websites and to operate our business

Purpose(s) for Collection - To enable us to analyse and improve our recruitment practices (including through the use of machine learning and other technologies)

 

Sensitive Information

We will only collect Information regarded as sensitive (e.g., details relating to your ethnic background, age, sex life or sexual orientation, race, physical or mental health, genetic data, biometric data, political, philosophical, or religious beliefs, trade union membership) if you have voluntarily submitted such Information to us or it becomes relevant to your application and as permitted by applicable data protection law. 

Our legal grounds for collecting and using Information

Where required by applicable data protection laws , we rely on the following legal grounds to process your Information in connection with our recruitment activities:

  • To take steps to enter into a contract with you, such as:
  • to make a decision as to whether you are the right person for the course you have applied for;
  • to contact you about your application and the selection process, as well as to respond to your requests.
  • With your consent (or your explicit consent where the Information is sensitive). We collect and use Information when you give it to us voluntarily for a specified purpose, such as to inform you about any job openings.
  • Where necessary for our legitimate interests as part of maintaining and improving our activities, such as:
  • in connection with any concerns or other matters that may arise from your involvement with us, such as any legal claims and any investigations;
  • to investigate and resolve potential or actual conflicts of interest (where applicable);
  • for training purposes; 
  • to consider you for any other position by us or our affiliate companies; and
  • to establish, exercise or defend legal claims. 
  • For the purposes of carrying out the obligations and exercising specific rights of the controller or of the individual to whom the Information relates in the field of employment law where the Information is sensitive, such as:
  • ensuring a safe working environment that minimises the spread of infectious diseases.

 

Shortlisting & Automated-Testing

Where we receive a large volume of applications, we may use technologies, such as key-word searching, machine-learning and automated online-testing, to assist us to shortlist suitable applicant, particularly during the early stages of the application process. Where we do so, we endeavor to apply fair and objective search terms and related-criteria. Where required by applicable law, we may offer an applicant an opportunity to express their point of view and to seek a review of a decision that may significantly affect them.

 

Background checks

We may carry out background checks on applicants (e.g. checking your references). Such background checks will be carried out only to the extent permitted by applicable law and at different stages of the selection process depending on the type of application you have made (e.g. it may apply only to the successful or shortlisted applicants). When required under applicable data protection law, we will ask for your consent, unless there is another legal basis for processing your information (e.g. a legitimate interest or a legal requirement) to carry out background checks. 

 

Sharing and Disclosure of Information

We will share Information on shortlisted and successful applicants with twofour54 and Image Nation with whom we are partnering to provide the CNN Academy Abu Dhabi.  They will use this information for the purposes of couse administration.  Where you consent to being contacted by twofour54 or Image Nation by checking the consent as part of your submission we may share the information we collected with them for that purpose. 

We may share and disclose Information in the following ways or for any other purpose disclosed at the time of collection:

  • With your consent. We may disclose Information when you direct us to do so or provide us with your consent, for example, if we collect references as part of your application.
  • Service providers and organizations we work with. We may share Information with service providers we have engaged to perform business-related functions on our behalf for the purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy. For example, to: (i) conduct research; (ii) maintain databases; and (iii) otherwise support our application and selection process such as our legal and professional advisors, and background checks providers (where relevant)
  • Affiliates. We may disclose Information to our affiliates for the purposes described throughout this Privacy Policy.
  • Legal and law enforcement purposes. We may disclose Information in response to legal process, for example, in response to a court order or a subpoena, or in response to a law enforcement or government agency's request. We also may disclose such Information to third parties: (i) in connection with fraud prevention activities, (ii) where we believe it is necessary to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activities, (iii) in situations that may involve violations of our terms of use or other rules, (iv) to protect our rights and the rights and safety of others, and (v) as otherwise required or permitted by law.
  • Change of control. We may transfer Information in the event of a business transaction, such as if we or one of our business units or our relevant assets are acquired by, sold to, or merged with another company or as part of a bankruptcy proceeding or a business reorganization.

 

Your Information Rights

Subject to applicable data protection laws (such as those in the EU) you may have the right to access the Information we hold about you, to request it to be updated and/or erased, to ask us for a copy of your Information, to request us to transmit it to another controller in a machine readable format and the right to object to the processing of your Information.

These rights are not absolute and are subject to various conditions under applicable data protection and privacy legislation and the other laws and regulations to which we are subject.

Where the processing of your Information relies on your consent, you also have the right to withdraw your consent at any time.

In certain countries, such as the European Union, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. As well as your legal rights, we strive to give you choices with respect to your Information.

If you created an account with us, you can access, correct and update some of the Information that we collected about you by logging into your account and making changes. 

 

Information Security

We aim to protect your Information by implementing and maintaining reasonable security, such as by using reasonable organizational, technological and physical safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the Information we hold.

 

Retention

We will retain your Information for as long as is necessary to achieve the purposes for which your Information was collected as described in this Privacy Policy. For example, if your application is successful we may keep your Information for a reasonable period of time while we run the CNN Academy 2020.

Generally, if your application is unsuccessful we will retain your Information for no more than [twelve (12)] months from the point at which we inform you that this is the case; this is to protect us from legal challenges and/or complaints, in case we need to revisit the application process.

In some circumstances we may retain your Information for longer periods of time, for instance, where we are required to do so to establish, exercise or defend legal claims.

Please also note that we may retain your Information in de-identified and/or aggregate form to enable us to analyse and improve our recruitment practices.

 

International transfers

We operate internationally, and some of the processes involved in our use of your Information will require your Information to be stored or processed in countries outside the country where you are located, including countries where the level of legal protection for your Information may be different and where you may have fewer legal rights in relation to it. In particular, your Information may be transferred to, and processed in the United States, where some of our systems are located. 

It is not practicable for us to list all possible destinations, but whenever we transfer your Information outside of a country or region, such as the European Economic Area, we will make sure that we take steps necessary to comply with applicable legal requirements. Therefore, where required, we will ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place by using appropriate contractual mechanisms, such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, or by relying upon the service providers’ participating in an approved international data transfer mechanism, including the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield Framework or the adoption of Binding Corporate Rules.
